Currently, we are seeking a talented Senior Data Scientist to join the Life Division in Aliso Viejo, California. The Life Insurance Division works with financial and insurance professionals to give families and businesses the life insurance coverage needed to help meet important financial protection, wealth accumulation, and wealth preservation goals.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Data Scientist is responsible for creating insights from large quantities of data using computer-based analytical and modeling techniques. This role is about applying the methods of data mining, statistics and modeling to large quantities of data, typically to generate business insights or identify underlying trends or patterns. The person in this position will analyze big data to gain a better understanding of our customers-how they interact with our company and our products and what they desire moving forward.

The Senior Data Scientist will be responsible for:
  • Collecting, analyzing and providing insight into the critical metrics that drive business
  • Applying analysis and visualization tools to data assets in order to identify descriptive and predictive relationships between data elements
  • Cataloguing, extracting, graphing and describing data in an effort to identify causal relationships that can be used
  • Supporting all aspects of business intelligence and operational excellence using all sources available as well as supporting the Business Intelligence Lead on projects, as requested

 
FACTORS FOR SUCCESS:
  • Bachelors Degree in Statistics, Economics, or equivalent required; Masters Degree preferred
  • 2+ years work experience in Life Insurance or Financial Services preferred
  • Skill and ability to serve as lead/mentor to support and guide more junior level analysts
  • Ability to evolve and adapt to a wide range of problems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to identify the critical questions that business users, executives and management are asking
  • Ability to establish solid working relationships at all levels and functions of the organization
  • Critical thinking skills and business acumen to identify optimal solutions and manage ambiguity
  • Passion for technology, efficiency, and problem solving
  • Experience with Qlikview or similar BI application preferred
  • Expert knowledge in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint)
  • High skill level in statistical analysis
  • Ability to write, design and troubleshoot SQL Code a plus (stored procedures, functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes, constraints)
  • Flexible, quick learner, and able to work independently without close supervision
  • Ability to make decisions about research direction and/or interact appropriately with internal customers to determine the requirements of their request
  • Must be highly skilled in information retrieval and data presentation
  • Proven track record in working with data including: extracting information, validating data, creating and maintaining custom data structures, and generally enhancing Pacific Life's ability to make data-driven decisions
